Many people love the idea of becoming a consultant and helping others succeed in life but feel they need to go to university for five years before they are worthy.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
When you were in Primary school you had a teacher that taught you what 2+2 was. (Yes 4)
You did not know this before they taught you this, but as soon as you were shown, you too could add 2+2 and theoretically teach someone else that math.
Now I know it is a simple example but consulting has different levels as well.
You have Startup businesses, small businesses, medium and large businesses, and they all need help with something.
As long as you always have your teacher (or mentor) to show you how to solve a problem you can always come up with the right answer.
So NO, you do not need a university degree to become a consultant just the right mentor to support you.
Consulting is one of the most lucrative businesses on the planet.
This is because you get paid for outcome, not time
One of the first business models I teach my clients is to find 6 clients that have a turnover of over One Million Dollars.
Then charge them $3,000.00 per month for your services.
And spend about 1-2 hours a week helping them
This equals $18,000.00 a month or $216,000 a year for around let’s say 20 hours work a week.
Now when you start learning these skills you may not be charging this amount, but even if it was only $1500 per month that is still $108,000 for 20 hours work.
Not a bad return on time.
Ask yourself How much are you making now, and how many hours do you need to put in to generate that income?
When you make the decision to be a consultant the first step is to find a proven system or framework you can follow.
Look for the mentor that feels right and you connect with that has a track record and make sure you know that they are not too busy to support you and be there to help you as you get started in your consulting career.
You just need to find a proven system that accomplished three things:
- It has a proven Lead Generation System that enables you to generate leads at will
- Ensure It has an effective sales system that allows you to convert leads at a high rate
- Check that it has a proven framework that enables you to produce outstanding results for your clients. (a business optimisation system)
Creating Self Belief and Confidence
Once you have ticked all three boxes when it comes to the systems you need for a successful business,you move to the next most important thing. SELF BELIEF
The most important thing is to build your confidence when you first start developing your business consulting skills.
One way to do this is to start with no pressure.
Here is a simple strategy for you.
A lot of initial stress can come about because you are concerned that you will not be able to generate results for your clients.
That is actually a good thing because it means that you have integrity.
So this is why I recommend that you first find three business owners and offer to help them for free. (in return for an introduction to another 2 business owners if they are happy with the results )
The great thing about this is that you have removed all pressure from yourself. If you don’t get results, no harm or guilt is present, however, when you do achieve great improvements (and practically all of my consultants have to date) then you start building that all-important self-belief.
Strive For Constant Improvement
So, after you have helped three clients and watched the impact your advice has on their business you can move to stage two.
Work with three clients at half price (say $1500 per mth) and watch their profits grow.
By this time, you will have understood that you have now developed a superpower to help others lead better business lives.
It is now time to charge your $3000 or more moving forward from there. (some of my consultants charge $5k and 7k per mth)
Isn’t it great when the student surpasses the master 🙂
The most important thing is that you build your confidence, knowing that you have the support of your mentor to step in when you are unsure about your next steps.

To become a highly paid-in-demand business consultant the number one skill above everything else is motivation and passion.
It is important that you love the idea of helping others succeed. Because if you only focus on the money it rarely pans out.
Some of the core skills I look for when selecting people are
- Be willing to talk to people
- Have a strong desire to help people achieve better outcomes
- Highly motivated to succeed
- They are coachable
- Have a positive attitude
- Are willing to step out of their comfort zone.
Really if you have a genuine desire to succeed and are willing to work hard, there are very few people that would not have the ability to become a consultant.
